Homeopathy
Homeopathy
is an effective and scientific system of healing which assists
the natural tendency of the body to heal itself. Just as your
body knows how to heal a cut on your finger, so can it heal
many deep-seated ailments when given the right stimulus. Homeopathy's
great power lies in recognizing that all symptoms of ill health,
be that physical or mental/emotional, are expressions of disharmony
within the whole person and that it is the person who needs
treatment, not the disease. While symptoms often manifest in
different organ systems or parts of the body, they are all expressions
of one central disturbance. To find the correct remedy for you,
your homeopath will need to know not only your physical symptoms
but also as much as possible about yourself and how your symptoms
affect you.
In
1796 a German doctor, Samuel Hahnemann, discovered a different
approach to the cure of the sick which he called homeopathy
(from the Greek words meaning "similar suffering"). Like Hippocrates
two thousand years earlier he realized that there were two ways
of treating ill health: the way of opposites and the way of
similars.
How
does it work?
Take for example, a case of insomnia. The way of opposites is
to treat this by giving a drug to bring on an artificial sleep.
This
frequently involves the use of regular or large doses of drugs
which can cause side effects or addiction. The way of similars,
the homeopathic way, is to give the person a minute dose of
a substance which in large doses causes sleeplessness in a healthy
person. Surprisingly this will enable the person to sleep naturally.
Homeopathic
remedies cannot cause side effects and you cannot become addicted
to them. This is because only a very minute amount of the active
ingredient is used in a specifically prepared form. It is not
the smallness of the dose nor the way the remedy is prepared
which makes it homeopathic, but when the symptoms of the remedy
and that of the person are matched based on their similarities.
